::31.10.06:: I heart my HRM! Want to know what sucks monkey's butts? Getting your swish new heart rate monitor (that was extra cheapo on ebay) when you have injured ribs! I'm like, how high can I get my heart rate? Run, run...ouch, ouch, double ouch! How the hell am I supposed to rest when I want to max out my heart rate? Since I set my HRM, I've burnt 491 calories. Pity I've eaten about 1,000. Well maybe not that many. My resting heart rate is around 70-75 bpm - is that good? I feel like my heart rate is high atm cos I can only breathe real shallow. I am so wearing my HRM for the rest of forever. I knew you'd love it! They rock! I think the best thing about them is when they beep at you to hurry along, your heart rate isn't high enough! I'm all "ALRIGHT! GET OFF MY BACK!" then think er, crankybee, it's just a watch. By 5:44 pm , atsounds like a fun toy! hope the ribs feel better soon Oh man, now I really want one. Can they tell you when you're about to have a heart attack, like during a spin class?
I'm pretty sure anywhere between about 60-80bpm is a good resting heart rate, and women tend to be in the higher end (70-80). :) I have never been away from your site for so long and I come back and you have a before photo!! You have come so flippin far it is so great to see. I love what the Trinny and Suz thing has given you. I really want those two to come to my house, be mean and resort my life. Hey Kathryn - sorry for the absence in commenting - this blogging thing is hard work getting around to everyone. I hope your ribs debruise themselves fast so you can use your HRM properly! I absolutely love mine and its amazing how much you really do try to max out your heart rate when you've got it on - it's addictable, but in a nice way! You are such a tease because I really want one!! Gotta save... By 8:30 pm , atWhich HRM did you get?
::30.10.06:: Miracle Cure I went to the doctor - my ribs aren't broken any more. They are just severely bruised. Woohoo. She said it would take about 10 days for them to heal and since 5 of those days are nearly up, that's no time at all. I'll soon be running again! Hope you're taking your arnica drops! Thank goodness! Now rest you so they heal faster. By 9:27 pm , at
woohooo! tis good news :) Ah, your super powers of healing are truly amazing. :)
I am so pleased that you'r recovering and will soon be able to run again :) That's good news Kathryn. Glad to hear they're not broken and you're on the mend! Hope you're taking it easy :)
Ping! It's weird when you know something in your head but don't really understand it then suddenly out of nowhere - ping! The lightbulb moment when you realise what it really means. Yesterday I got sick of lollygagging around being broken rib girl so decided to walk into Borders for some coffee and book reading fun. It's about 4kms so I figured I could walk it then get a tram home. I had my flat white and a vegetable frittata then ended up walking home because Sunday trams are impossibly not there - and my impatience always overrides my laziness and my common sense at not walking too much when I'm injured. You know, it's not the rib pain that stops you from exercising. It's that you can only take shallow breathes. That really screws you up. But that wasn't my big epithany. I'd been reading through the Trinny and Suzanne books on how to dress and, walking home it hit me: I'm always going to have this body shape. See I'd been thinking I just needed to lose some more weight and I'd eventually have a nice flat belly - that the middle fat would get the hint. But that aint going to happen, is it. Sure it will get smaller and lesser but it's not going away. I have this shape for life. That's why people dress for their shape. It's not because I'm fat - it's because that's the type of body I have. For some reason, I'd been thinking this was like an exam. You get to the 'right' weight and you pass, or you don't and you fail. But there is no pass, no fail. There isn't a 'one size fits all' goal at the end of the rainbow. And that's an amazingly liberating thought. We're brainwashed into the thinking if we do everything right one day will be a collection of perfect body parts but it's never going to happen. Ever. There is no finish line, no prize giving ceremony. There's just me with my imperfect body and you with your imperfect body - and some of those imperfect parts are damn fine. We're more than the sum of our parts, more than just a 'renovator's delight'. Once you realise you can't reach perfection, the pressure's off. Today I'm best version of ME that I can possibly be and that's better than being some ideal cookie cutter girl. As a friend of mine used to say - be yourself, and let yourself shine. I'm starting to get that.
I'm glad u came to this realisation. It's very healthy and uplifting and I love it when people are 'loving themselves sick'. Thx for the reminder...glad you got yr 'miracle cure'... MUCH better than broken ribs! By 3:34 pm , atAwesome post Kathyrn and yeah, we're never gonna have those figures in all the mags. That and the fact we're not 14 anymore to have them either. We do have to come to accept our body shape and I really think the main thing is to be in our "Healthy Weight Range". Gotta feel pretty damn good about that :-) By 9:25 pm , atVery healthy attitude! Honestly, even if you got the bod you longed for, you would then find other things about yourself to focus on. When I was skinny I started to obsess about my spider veins. By wife2abadge, at 4:34 am
I look at those young skinny chicks and think "One day you will have children & then you're pert breasts will drop to your waist and your belly will get big & you'll have cellulite"
::29.10.06:: Blahs Yesterday ended up being not good. I've been feeling really blah and then sat up all night watching Buffy with my sister and eating junk food. Bad, bad move. I wanted an Eskimo Pie so went to the shops to get one but they only have all the new fancy icecreams so I got other stuff to compensate - a mint chip cornetto and a bar of fruit and nut chocolate. I think it's the first time in over a year I've bought a full sized chocolate bar, not just one of those snack sized ones. When I opened it, it was gross - I dunno how old it was cos the use by date was in some Asian language but it was all powdery and crumbled, just like those vampires after Buffy stakes them. I still managed to eat half of it because that was the kind of mood I was in. Today I feel blah again but I've slept most of the day. I think I might go have a shower and get dressed then try going for a walk. That should help. I hate the thought that it could be weeks until I run again. It seems all this year has been bad - what with colds and flus and bronchitis and now this. Oh but another good thing about broken ribs - I'm getting to be an expert at squats. I'm doing hundreds a day since it hurts to bend over.
::28.10.06:: PS. To answer Lisa's question, this is how I managed to break my ribs: as I fell, and I fell like a ton of bricks, I balled up my hand into a fist and it ended up in under my left boob! So I ended up not just falling but giving myself a really hard punch in the ribs at the same time. Don't try this at home, kiddies. I forgot to mention, there was this most lovely woman who came to my assistance when I fell. She gave me some antiseptic baby wipes for my wounds and was really concerned (she was walking her baby in the pram). She told me that she'd just been wish she had my motivation to get out and run... yep, that's me, unmotivating people with my klutziness! Owwwwwwwwwwwwwwww! Ouchawawa! By 8:27 am , at
LOL at running under the influence, but ouchies for everything else... By 12:28 pm , atHope you get well soon, sounds absolutely painful!
Yep, that'd do it! LOL.
ouch that must have hurt By Baby Bump Wanted, at 7:00 pm OH. MY. GOD! I can't believe - cannot BELIEVE - you broke your ribs! I am trying not to laugh at how you aided the process by balling your hand up under your boob! How long to ribs take to get better? And what was the verdict on continuing to exercise? By 4:26 pm , atOH. MY. GOD! I can't believe - cannot BELIEVE - you broke your ribs! I am trying not to laugh at how you aided the process by balling your hand up under your boob! Ouch! What a way to break your ribs. :-/ By 1:21 am , at
::27.10.06:: More Oops... When I said I broke my ribs, I was joking! Well I thought I was joking. The doctor didn't. Diagnose: broken ribs. Ouch. I really am tough like Mad Max! It doesn't help that I had a hacking cough. Hacking cough plus broken ribs = double ouch. It also doesn't help that every time I say my ribs are broken, I crack up laughing. If you're sitting there reading this, procrastinating about going for a run or a walk or to the gym, then get up and do it now. After reading about Shauna and Sue and being injured myself, I reckon you have to stop taking your body for granted. Don't think - I'll exercise tomorrow - because you can't count on your body being there for you tomorrow. Be grateful that you have a body capable of being fit and active, regardless of size and shape. There are so many people out there (no just sooky me with my broken ribs but people with real disabilities and illness) that would be damn happy to be able to slog through a gruelling workout session. I do think I need to discuss with my doctor WHY I keep falling over. I figure it could be either because I have zero balance or a problem with my shoes (the nikes have been cursed by sweatshop children, I bet). I mean, I used to fall over lots but that was because I was drunk. Now I've cut back on drinking and I still fall over. I swear to god, if I'd done this pissed, I'd have not injured myself half as bad. Maybe I'll take a pitcher of Margarita on my next run.
How in the hell do you break your ribs that way??? lol. Did you fall onto something on the ground?? Or did you belly-flop or something? It just seems such a strange way to break them. So much for Dr Mum's diagnosis huh!!! Seriously though, I'm sorry to hear you've broken your ribs - that would suck. Hope you feel better soon!!
How's your core strength Kathryn? Weak abs etc can cause problems with balance and stability. I used to fall over a lot before I worked my arse off and developed abs of steel. Just a thought...
Here here sister regarding not putting things off. By Miss Pink Lotus, at 10:44 pm Oh you poor thing! Well, I need a beer in each hand to keep me upright while dancing, is that the same thing as what you need for your running? I hope you get better soon babe. What a bummer. By 8:26 am , at
Don't think - I'll exercise tomorrow - because you can't count on your body being there for you tomorrow. By 10:35 am , at
Oops I went for my run this arvo and fell over (again). Lots of scrapes and grazes but, worst of all, I've damaged my ribs. I felt fine to finish my run but when I got home and tried to bend over, ouch! When I cough or laugh or breathe deeply it hurts. I figure it's either a fractured rib, bruised ribs or a pulled muscle. I did ring Dr Mum - sure she doesn't have a medical degree but there's no hour long wait either - and she said if I'd broken my rib, I'd have never kept running. I'm not so sure about that, cos I'm hella tough - like when Mad Max had his leg broken, he kept going. Tomorrow I'm going to the real doctor. I figure they can't do much but leastways they can strap it much better than my bungled job. The worst bit is I'm worried this will put me out of action, exercise-wise, for a while. I'll talk this over with the doctor and hopefully running will still be okay. I can't see any problem with spin classes but I'm thinking my weights sessions will be restricted to lower body. I can't imagine attempting a one-arm row or crunches at the moment. As for the bright side -strapping around the ribs really gives me a defined waist and perky boobs :)
Damn, welcome to the injured list. It's not a fun place to be! Just like you to find a positive side! Hope yr feeling better soon.. By 10:32 am , atOh dear. I cant believe it. You poor sausage/Mad Max. By The Candid Bandit, at 12:13 pm
::26.10.06:: A big mountain of sugar is too much for one man! When you eat sugar, it gets lonely in your belly so it calls out to all it's friends - 'come join us, it's a party in here.' It does this by making you think you want more sugar and more and more until you become a big ball of sugariness. Even when you think you've had enough and you want to stop, it keeps calling to it's kind. You have so much inside you, it's gained control. It calls louder and louder. You are in it's power. The only way to stop it is cold turkey. Cut off the source. I'm going to try it for a few days and see how I go. Bwahaha, I agree...cold turkey! I had to do that with my coke addiction of late and coping rather well but the trick was to replace it with something else, something better. By 10:55 am , atA very good idea mate! Just leave sugar alone .... By 2:50 pm , atI have a thing for marshmallows & I can never stop at one...or ten for that matter, they just keep calling for more. Most of the time I do my best to pass them in the supermarket, but I ALWAYS make sure they are there waiting for me just in case.
Hee hee hee hee By Miss Pink Lotus, at 4:12 pm Good luck babe!! Yes, fight that evil sugar! I think I need to kick my habit too, damn night shifts turning me into an eating machine. Is that why i'm so (sickly) sweet? LOL By 10:46 pm , at
::25.10.06:: Balls My cupcake obsession has been replaced. My new obsession is the chocobana balls at the local cafe. They are like rum balls but chocolate banana flavoured with a malteser in the middle. OMG they are good! I used to write then take a hard copy down to the cafe to edit. Now I write just so I can go to the cafe and get chocobana balls! I can't stop at one either. I've got a two ball a day habit. It'd be worse except I feel piggy enough asking for a second one from the staff, let alone a third. Then yesterday, I had my first ball and when I ordered the second, they were out. Good thing too I reckon. Today I didn't go in, thinking they'd have not restocked yet but I've been on a sugar binge. I don't think I've eaten that many calories but it's all been on sweet stuff, not real food. What's my problem? Oh yeah, Turkish Delight icecreams - don't buy them. They are evil. Evil, I tells ya. Evilly delicious. Arrggh... just to get away from my food obsession for a moment, last night I visited Andrew. I took him to the shops and was about to drop him home when he let drop he's changing uni courses. I started screaming at him, then got out of the car and followed him inside. He said he thought I was going home and I was like - how can I go home, I haven't finished screaming at you. So I screamed at him for about an hour then felt better and left. It bugs me that he decided to change two years into his course. And bugged me more that he didn't even discuss it with me. I'm only his mother. I only gave birth to him and raised. What do I know? Then my sister started to say that I'd dropped out of my first uni course halfway so I had to beat her over the head with a blunt object until she shut up. Ah, the old "do as I say, not as I do" routine. Works for me.
I think you need to find another cafe. One that serves really crap food. It could be worse. He could finish the course and then tell you he's not going to follow that career choice after all. Your sister definitely deserves a beating. Kids, they just have to live their own lives don't they even though we "know" the best way to help them. We raise them to be independent but oh how it hurts to watch them stuffing up or even doing the right thing without including us in the decision making. It will work out in the big scheme of life but certainly warranted some screaming from you.
oh they sound too good.... Mmm, choccobana balls sound like my kind of thing and remember you at that age? No one was gonna tell you what you can and can't do LOL, no one! By 7:36 pm , at
I love chocolate. I love bananas. I do believe I would love a choco banana ball!
::24.10.06:: Sick Tonight I went to spin class and about halfway through I realised the woman beside me had been constantly blowing her nose. Is there some polite way to ask someone if their disease is contagious? Because I'm a quiet, polite person, I spent the next 20 minutes ignoring her and trying not to breathe in her direction but a very big part of me wanted to get up and change bikes, moving right away. And another part deep down inside wanted to jump up and yell at her to get her filthy infectous body away from mine. I've spent months over winter wracked with colds and flus and finally I've had a run of NOT being sick, so this selfish, diseased woman has to sit herself beside me even though there were plenty of other bikes, even though she could have stayed at home -- and now I'm sneezing and feeling a little feverish. I hate these people. Fair enough, sometimes you have to leave the house with a cold or flu, but you never have to go to spin class. I bet she was all 'look at me, I'm such a brave soldier, exercising when I'm sick.' Arrgghh, I want to beat her around the head with housebricks. She didn't even spray her bike down with the disinfecting spray when she finished. She just wiped it down and left the germs for the next person. gross! GROSS! you poor thing, that is so wrong. vile woman. i think when your illness involves flowing bodily fluids it's time to stay at home. fair enough running outside but trapped in a wee room with a dozen people on bikes, that's not fair for your classmates!
That is disgusting! I am sick but stayed at home when I was contagious. I felt well enough to go to a yoga class but I didn't want to take that chance of giving it to anyone else. Grr, my pet peeve too. What a selfish bitch! By 8:57 am , atyuk - not nice. I hope you don't get too sick. You should have moved! And given her a shitty look while you were moving bikes.... I think you must be too nice! I would have anyway! hee hee, but then, I ain't nice. If you get sick, shit happens. By 10:14 am , at
Not nice! OMG! That reminds me of my last boss. I rarely get colds or the flu, maybe once every 2 to 3 years. This boss came into the office sick 4 times in 6 months! And every time he coughed all over the place and didn't even try to avoid other workers...and every time I got sick too! Since he left 3 months ago I haven't got sick once! GRR By 3:51 pm , atyuck, we have this annoying woman at work who comes in when she is crook as and coughs all over us! argh!
::21.10.06:: Busy I spent most of yesterday running around. I had a few things to do in the morning and thought I'd have no time to go to the market but managed to run in and get my shopping done in 10 minutes. Woohoo! Our beautifying appointments were at 11.00 so we got ready, grabbed a takeaway coffee and caught the train in. Got to the place I thought it was but they said they only did hair and the beauty stuff was around the corner. We went around the corner but couldn't find a beauty school so had to go back to the hair place and get better directions. Turned out it was around the corner and up a block! So we got to the second place but they didn't have us booked in - her exact words were - 'we aint got no appointment for you.' I'm glad they didn't because on top of her appalling grammar, the place looked a bit scummy. She told us there was another beauty school and gave directions. Finally we got to the right place and it looked lovely. The people were great too. I got my eyebrows waxed then manicured and pedicured. They'd told me to wear open toed shoes so I'd put on a dress and sandals because the weather was fine when I left home. I decided to go look around the shops while my sister got finished off and it was freezing. I felt like crying from the pain of it. I couldn't wait to get home and put on my nice warm trackies. My nails look great but they have dints in them. I don't think I've ever had perfectly smooth nail polish ever. How do people do it? I can leave my nails drying forever but as soon as I touch something, it gets marked. We are definitely going back - they have all kinds of lush spa treatments and I want to try that out. Later I went for a run with my friend. I made him go to the gym with me and run on the treadmill because I still hadn't thawed out. We got bored so we upped the pace every 5 minutes then every 2 minutes. Again I got indigestion. I think it happens when I eat fatty food then run (I'd got a potato cake at the train station - bad me). Never again. Then we headed out for our free dinner (see post below). It rocked. Definitely one of the best meals I've had in ages. I get a bit worried about using freebie vouchers and stuff like that because people can make you feel like a dick or else you turn up and they have all these weird conditons that you didnt' know about. I don't get that - surely the reason for offering freebies/discounts is to promote the business. If you make someone feel like a dickhead, then they aren't ever going to come back. Anyway there was none of that last night and bonus, we thought only the mains were free but we got free entree as well! To start with, we shared a tapas plate - including the most delicious fetta and a very smooth pate, rice balls and a rocket and pear salad. The rocket and pear salad was divine and I'll be making that a lot this summer. For mains, I had grilled flake with garlic mash. That was sensational. My companions (as they say in the food reviews) both had roo and said it was the best roo they've ever eaten. I'd have not had dessert except they had apple and rhubarb crumble. Who can resist that? Not me. Yum. Sensational. And the service was just perfect too. The two guys working were very unobtrusive yet every time our water bottle was empty or we needed them for something, they'd appear at the table. I'm definitely going back for more. I guess that's the point of the freebie, get you in and get you hooked!
You are going to LOVE your polar - trust me! They are fantasssssssssstic - I am addicted to mine, and it has helped me stay in the right heart zone thing when I'm working out. Great decision! As for the free meal voucher, it reminded me of something that happened when Chops and I first moved to Glebe a year or so ago. I kept a shop-a-docket (buy one main, get one free) for a local Indian restaurant - let's call in Dakent (because I can't remember the real name of it) By 2:19 pm , at
So the first place did, in fact, have you booked in? I'm confused, damn double negatives.. By CaramelKitKat, at 5:22 pm
Gosh, bit of a drama getting to your appointment but I'm glad you finally got there and it was worth it. Shame about freezing but "beauty is pain" LOL :-) By 7:09 pm , atSound's like you had the perfect day yesterday Kathryn. Getting pampered, going for a run and then to top it off a free fabulous meal :-)!!
hey I just tried the coles pilates dvd - I've never done pilates before and I can feel it everywhere :) Thanks for the heads up!
I have to go to the Terminus next time in Melbourne - I wonder if they'll do a 2 for 1 meal with the $30 parma? They sound fantastic! Thanks for the report.
::20.10.06:: Watching, Reading, Doing Last night, I went to see Little Miss Sunshine. Great film with lots of laughs. It's about a family that's pretty screwed up - the grandfather got kicked out of the old people's home for doing heroin, the father is a wannabe self-help guru, the brother has taken a vow of silence and the mother is Toni Collette. They have to drive across country (I assume, not being that familiar with US geography) to take the youngest daughter to a beauty pagent. It gets a big, five-star rating from me. The day before that, I went to Borders and found a great book. I think it was called Anatomy of Female Strength Training or something like that. I must be turning into an exercise nerd because I found it fascinating. It goes through common strength training exercise and shows the muscles used through anatomical diagrams. For many, say squats, it shows the difference in muscle use between difference stances - all kinds of geeky info like that. As well as helpful stuff like if you do lunges with wide legs you work more into the glutes whereas narrow legs works the quads. I hate these bimbo magazines that give workouts that say do X, Y & Z to get 'hot buns'. I want to know exactly what I'm working (and love having the pictures). I think I'll buy it when I get some cash. Oh yeah, I also kind of accidentally bought a heart rate monitor on ebay last night. I've been meaning to buy a watch - I haven't owned one for years and would find it really helpful when I'm running - then got onto HRMs and put in a bid, not expecting to win. It's a Polar F4 which I know nothing about but it gives you your calorie expenditure which I love, although I have a nasty feeling I'm not burning nearly as many as I think. Yesterday I did a 10 km run. I suffered through every single step of it but I did it. I think the problem was my stupidity - I thought it would be unwise to do a lower body workout and a long run on the same day, so I did my weights the day before instead. Big mistake because my muscles were so tight! I weighed in today. A whopping 300 gram loss, but at least I'm going down again. Plus that isn't for a full week. Around 3 days I think. I do need to take my weigh ins seriously because otherwise I stuff around and put on weight. Not good. So today I went to the market and am about to go into the city to the beauty school to get a manicure and pedicure. Woohoo! Then this arvo I'm meeting a friend for a run and then we're going out to dinner. If you live in the Northern suburbs of Melbourne (or want to travel), this is worth checking out. The Terminus Hotel in Clifton Hill has a special offer - join their mailing list and get a free meal. It's not even a buy one, get one free deal. How much does that rock! I'd post the link but I'm lazy. Still it's easy enough to google it.
Well done on the loss! Sounds like you are going well with your running too.
I have that book....Women's Strength Training Anatomy by Frederic Delavier. It is great, but has one teensy drawback: It has no upper body exercises, only legs and abs. Cos us delicate little women wouldn't want to grow muscular arms or something, now would we? *rolls eyes*
LOL oh yeah, I totally understand the geek stuff. When I get into something, I really "get into it" too. You almost certainly find me going straight for the health/fitness section these days first and usually come out with something or at least a list. By 9:07 pm , at
Did you have the $30 parma at the Terminus? I've heard it's pretty damn good but you need to order it a day in advance!
::18.10.06:: My Bad! Arrgghh... after the ugly photo incident below, I got on the scales - 75 frigging kilograms! That's a 5 kilogram gain over the past couple of months. I thought I'd die. So I curled up on my bed, waiting for the Angel of Weight Gaining Death to come for me but apparently it isn't that easy. Instead, I've been plagued by black thoughts. I can't do this any more, I've lost my mojo. All my weight losing skills have gone! What a crock. It's so easy to get all superstitious about this crap - to think you need this or that, your lucky pants or the right mix of protein to carbs to lose weight but the honest to god truth is simple - don't put the freakin' food in your mouth. I gave myself a pep talk, reminding me that I'm the one in charge of my life. It all comes back to me. I'd lost sight of that. It's so easy to go with the flow, and the flow is flowing into the local fish n' chip shop. I've been feeling out of control - eating crap and not cooking good meals, playing spider solitaire and faffing around instead of writing, going to bed late and waking up later. But I'm taking back the power. It's not magic or the right alignment of the planets that I need. It's knowing my priorities and what I want from life. ps. the scales are back to 73 kg so I think I must have been bloating :) Uh huh, I hear you! I am guilty of this too and when I am sick, all my discipline goes out the window. I've stacked on since getting sick last Friday and am gonna pay for it. You're right, reclaim the power. It is up to us. When I'm feeling better, I'm doing a 5kg/8 Week Challenge and will kick butt. We know how to do this now sister! :-) By 2:43 pm , at
Hey you - in the words of a very wise friend of mine - STOP DICKING AROUND!!!!! By 6:18 pm , atI have done the same thing many times, it is so easy. But you know you can lose it again. I bet you are now really motivated to go for it... I know the feeling, I was up far too much this week (and knew it before I stepped on the scales), but a couple of good days and they seem to be heading back in the right direction. I'm sure you can get it back off again, no worries.
::15.10.06:: Photo of DoomI wanted to post a photo of me in my shorts so I got my BFF, David to take this the other night. Arrgghh! When I saw the pic, I nearly died. I look so fat. Check it out, it's like I have a bumbag under my tee-shirt, a bumbag of lard. Yesterday I felt very fat and depressed but today I'm over it... almost. It's just a photo, I don't look like that all the time. What can't be cured, must be endured - although I'm still working out how much can be cured because that beats the hell of enduring. Today's big excitement, for me anyways, was the Spring into Shape run #2. Woohoo, go me - I finished the 8 km run without requiring one lick of medical assistance. Sadly enough, that's like some kind of record. I met heaps of people off the ausrun forum before the race, all very intimidating with their masterful atheletic prowess. I am such a n00b around them. One day I want to look like a runner so that people who don't know me can look at me and know I run, even when I'm not running. After the race, in the goodie bag line, I heard someone call out my name and turned to see the spunkalicious Michelle. As for the run itself, I'm not that happy with my time. Without going into all the issues with my digestive tract, I had some queasiness so had to stop off for a toilet break plus drop back to a walk a couple of times until things settled down. It felt like I had a big, heavy rock in the pit of stomach! Still I knocked quite a few minutes off my time from the last run so I can't complain too much. Finally, here's a tip for any Buffy fans - Big W have the dvds for $32 a season a season. Woohoo! Plus if you go to the one in the QV building, the PA in the store stuffs up and keeps making fart noises. People who are juvenile and unsophisticated, might find that pants wettingly funny... I know I did.
Well done on bettering your time (is that even a word?? LOL), even with the 'tummy trouble'. As for the photo, you're right you DON'T always look like that. I'm currently making photo posters for my party next week and i've found some clangers. I was thinking about not including them but then I thought, stuff it - I don't always look like that, and mostly I don't look like that now, and even better I won't look anything like that on the night of my party!!! By 3:21 pm , at
Good job on the run.... don't be intimidated by the way other runners look - looks can be deceiving. I mean, here am I, sitting here in all my fancy running gear, and I barely managed a piddly 2kms today without dying from lack of oxygen. Or something....
ohh kathryn! i for one think you look hot and i would kill to have your legs. you are a vixen. luckily we're human beings that walk upright, and not leaning forward like a cave man, otherwise we'd all have a wee belly like that! actually mine would flop down to my ankles!
Hey, my tummy does that too, especially in yoga when my singlet is halfway to my boobs! We all get that, don't worry. Great legs and I dig the stripes and shorts too. By 9:10 pm , at
I'm with Shauna. Next time you have a photo taken stand up straight and suck in. Everyone has a tummy like that when they bend forward....except for maybe Victoria Beckham but that's only because she's wearing the tightest jeans on the planet. Who doesn't look like that when they're bent over and not photoshopped? Well done on the running time. Does the tshirt say "I heart Northcote?" too cool. Oh yes - I wqas supposed to enter one or two of these wasn't I? How annoying. Quick someone link me to a race that'll give me a medal just for doing it. I reckon I might turn up then haha
Well done on the run. Yeah, I can see the belly, but you ARE all hunched over...what you should be looking at are your GREAT LEGS! I would KILL KILL KILL for legs that look like yours, and not the stumpy ones I'm currently sporting! I think you should retake the photo and strike a pose this time! By 2:11 pm , atCheck out those pins! ;) OMG, your legs are to die for!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When one leans forward, all that re-distributes itself elsewhere, hangs in front of us. You look hot and this was just an unflattering picture/pose. By The Candid Bandit, at 11:13 am

::13.10.06:: Spinning I went to the council gym last night for spin class... whoa, I'd forgotten what a real spin class is like. At Fitness First, I swear they 'dumb down' the spinning to make it more accessible so I'm used to things being cruisy, and I know you can work at your own level during spin, but this class last night was full on. No taking time out for recovery between tracks and leisurely toweling down and sipping water. The whole time we either sprinted or climbed. The instructor played a doof tape - normally I hate doof with a passion (and would, if I legally could, shoot every single person blaring doof out their subwoofters while they wait at the lights outside our house at 2 am) - but it worked so well in this class. Instead of being distracted by some disco track, it was like having a constant background rhythm. I ended up sweating bucketloads. Wooo-eee! I loved it. I'll definitely be going back. Has anyone heard of Ergo? They also run Ergo classes so I asked about them, apparently it's like a longer spin class but with a whole different feel. I'm going to try it out. Tonight I had to do a 5 km run as part of my program from my coach - have I mentioned how much I love having a running coach? It rocks having this new focused approach to running. Anyway, since it was damn hot here today I waited for the cool change, and waited and waited. In the end I decided I'd go over to Albert Park hoping for a cool breeze off the water. It was dark by the time I got there but I figured the track would be well lit. I figured wrong - it's lit in places but other bits were dark and scary! *** You know what sucks about my life? I seem to have less time to do anything now than I did when I was working. What's with that shit? *** My veins have been sticking out tonight. I think it could be caused by dehydration. I'm drinking lots of water, just in case. But maybe I've been pumping too much iron and am getting freaky, weight lifting veins. Yikes! *** Tomorrow is market day. I want to get some stuff to make yummy salads, something more adventurous than lettuce and tomatoes. I might go hunting for some ideas.
It's the heat - your veins dilate and stick out when it's hot. It's your poor body's pathetic attempt at cooling itself.
Nope - that cool change never came but well done on the exercise and the spin class. Sorry, cant help with Ergo. Hi there, great blog! I have just started running, and have to ask - where do you find a running coach? I really love the idea - I can run for about 1km in the gym (Can you tell I'm just a beginner? lol!) but once I get outside, I just can't seem to do it! And I having been trying to get up the courage to do a spin class - do you have to be hyper fit to last? crankybee... By 11:43 am , atHey, thanks for your advice! I posted a reply on my blog, then thought "she may never see it!" so here's a cut and paste version! I think I am nearly game enough to try spinning, and I think the outdoor running thing is all in my head...at the gym, I can run while distracting myself by gazing at the TV and ignore what I'm doing - kind of "Up there for thinking, down there for dancing". But outside, I have to watch where I'm going and crazy stuff like that! I am guilty of doing a mild crazy run on the treadmill, imagining I am in Gwen Stefani film clip. I have hummed very loudly too. Probably sang too. But I don't care - no-one knows me! Although after the yell at myself, I unfortunately did see my boy Chops laughing at me and he was rowing away...cheeky git! Will investigate the couch to 5k program...and thanks again! By 12:50 pm , at
It's roasting hot here today, not nice. What is it that you're doing with your spare time then? I hope you're writing!! By 2:26 pm , atMan, you are a glutton for punishment Kathryn. You put me to major shame in regards to working out. I think you are making me want to run now too and I am NOT a runner LOL. By 2:31 pm , at
The Spin classes sound pretty full on which is what we want isnt it, Yikes??! It's so good to see you still into it after dropping the gym membership
::11.10.06:: Temptations Well Monday started strong, then I got side tracked by movies and coffees and saganaki. I think the coffees and saganaki were an attempt to soothing the emotional wrecks of our brains after watching Material Girls. We've been on a real dumb teen movie kick lately and went to see John Tucker Must Die a few weeks ago - that was fun - but Material Girls melted our brains with it's stupidity. It's a big call, but I'm not afraid to say it's the worst movie I've ever seen. It just didn't make sense. But then eating a gutful of fried cheese doesn't make sense either. Yesterday, I meant well but then friends wanted to go out to dinner and I can't be all anti-social and Vietnamese is so yum. Who knew that one teeny serving of sweet and sour pork had a wolloping 600 calories? Damn you, delicious pork! Tonight I'm going out for dinner again! This time I'm combining it with a run so it shouldn't be too bad. Then dinner out again on Friday. Will this madness ever stop? I discovered something last night - I have buns of steel! Actual butt muscles. I made everyone poke my bum after dinner and they were astounded at the steeliness. At least the exercise is working even if the eating is crap.
drooling at Saganaki.... Bwahahaha...I get Dan to feel my "buns of steel" too ;-) Enjoy eating out! It's nto everyday, every week. By 10:50 am , atahh buns of steels... that's a great phrase :) nice work tiger! I used to have a high school boyfriend that used to make me punch him in the stomach to test his abs of steel...he now works for the Taxation Department By 11:46 pm , atI have this great Monty Pythonesque mental image of all these people lining up in a restaurant to poke you in the arse!
Buns of steel, hey? I briefly started getting a steely abs when I was doing heaps of pilates and made Tom feel them all the time. It just felt so weird but cool to have a bit of my body that was that hard and muscular. But that's all gone now, I need to get back into it again!
*squeeze* they are steely aren't they? Hope you don't mind being felt up by a total stranger. By 11:34 am , at
::9.10.06:: Monday Morning Motivation Arrghhh... I don't know what was up with me yesterday. I had a day of laziness - sleeping, snacking and playing spider solitaire. To top it all off, we went to the supermarket late last night then decided we needed coffees so went to a late night diner and had hamburgers! Not a good snack at midnight. Sometimes I think you need a day off to get the mojo back, because I woke up this morning all primed to get back into it. I went down to Phil's Bakehouse - home of delicious cupcakes and other yumminess - and got nothing but my morning coffee. I'm proud of my steely resolve. Another motivating factor is that one of the guys on the Ausrun forum offered free running coaching as he wants to start working in that area. I've got a shiny new training program all printed out and stuck up on the fridge. Oh and I'm loving cottage cheese at the moment. I've not eaten it for years - since I was about 12 and Mum made me do Weight Watchers. I thought I hated it after being force fed it for months but it rocks. How's this for the most sanctimonious sounding dieter's lunch - rice thins with tuna and cottage cheese, topped with capsicum and cucumber? But it was damn delicious. It's great to discover new low calorie foods like cottage cheese and tuna. It spices things up, kind of like when you've been married for 10 years so you need to dress up in the naughty nurse's uniform (well so I've been told, not having been married). I'm not a huge fan of cottage cheese, but here's a snack that's nice. Cottage cheese + chopped up apple + sultanas + walnuts + celery. How much you need for each ingredient is up to you. Celery is optional, sultanas is a must. Good to hear you are having a better day. How about Cottage Cheese/Jam or Cottage Cheese/Banana on cruskits. Yumm - sweet fix.
Oh yeah, cottage cheese is my "period" power food. I always crave it around this time. That and gherkins with cheese and salami. That's the wog in me. By 3:53 pm , at
I would kill for some cottage cheese right now!! Naughty nurse eh? Might have to look into that! LOL. By 7:22 pm , at
Love cottage cheese w gerkins *licks lips* yummo, and good on cruskits. By CaramelKitKat, at 10:57 am ooooh, i like cottage cheese mixed with sweetner, cocoa & WW jam, pretend choc berry cheesecake!
::8.10.06:: Stuff Arrrgghhh... not so much happiness with my KMart purchases. The dumbbell set only contains one dumbbell. I never thought to check it, I just assumed a dumbbell set would be a pair! Still it has it's uses. As for the fitball, there are parts missing to the footpump so I have to take it back. It's damn frustrating. I tried to put it together but it says to use the red nozzle to inflate and there is no nozzle!
That really sucks, I would be writing a letter. Hope you've had a good weekend otherwise. By 5:00 pm , atThat really sucks hope you can replace them soon.
I'm seriously considering getting a dumbbell set*. Since most of the exercises I do with dumbbells involve me supporting myself with one arm while I move the other (like bent-over rows and tricep extensions) I'd be able to do most of them with just one... hope you're managing to work out what you're going to do. One dumbell? Mmm, and missing parts hey. I bought some gym gear from there a while back and had a bad experience but I thought it was only me! By 9:14 am , atBugger!!
::6.10.06:: Fat and Tired! I had a huge night last night - a benefit gig for music legend, Ian Rilen, including Paul Kelly, Tim Rogers, Don Walker and the Beasts of Bourbon in one massive night of entertainment. We didn't know Paul Kelly was playing until we got there so he was thrown in for free like a melodic set of steak knives. I drank more beers than I intended but had the most fab night o' rock! Then this morning I had to get up at the crack of dawn (well after staying out to all hours, 9 am felt like the crack) to go to the market. I had a junk food breakfast - Friday is free day after all - and did my food shopping. Then we headed to the shopping centre to do other shopping. I tried on some more short shorts - red and white gingham ones - cute but not $30 worth of cute, so I put them back. I finally got to Kmart to buy my exercise stuff - ended up with a new set of adjustable dumbbells, a new fitball and the high impact flooring. The flooring works well - I put it together and have it under my mat. I think it will be brilliant for yoga, as well as doing weights. I can prolly even do some skipping inside! I haven't tried pumping up the fitball yet or played with the weights. I feel like a really Sporty Spice with my room full of exercise gear, but then that might be because we watched Spiceworld this week (what a great movie). Oh yeah, and we had pretzels. If you ever go to a shopping centre with Pretzel World, try it out. They are low in calories (well for shopping centre food) and so delish. I didn't need to eat anything else after my pizza breakfast, but couldn't resist so I shared one with my sister. After shopping, Andrew and I went for a run. Woohoo! I've finally got my boy running. We went to Edwardes Park in Reservior which has a 1.5 km running track. Great for a first run because you can do a lap fairly easily plus it has 100 metre markers. Andrew ran about 500 metres then took a walk break. After he walked a while, I suggested doing 100 metre run, 100 metre walk for the rest. That would have been sensible except Andrew decided the run section should be a race! I could barely keep up with him, then he'd walk so slow for the next bit because he'd be buggered. Damn fool kid. I tried to talk sense into him but he reckons it better to run fast for the running bit so you get over it faster! He didn't join me for a second lap though - so I told him we'd go back Sunday. I learnt a valuable lesson today - junk food breakfast + run = not good. I don't think I've ever had indigestion or heart burn before because my sister had to explain that's what my symptoms meant. The pizza and coffee and pretzel and diet coke all slooshed up in my belly! On the way home, we called into NQR (food clearance outlet) and did some more shopping. When I got home, I realised I had to carry all the stuff inside. The 10kg weights set was least of my worries compared to all the food. Sometimes I wish I had off street parking. Ah, what luxury. My housemate has two old station wagons filled with crap that he parks outside the house. He has another car he drives, those ones are just like storage! We can never park anywhere near our house. Now I feel all tired from running around all dayand fat from eating junk food. I'm still hovering between 70 - 71 kgs although my eating seems to be be better this week - I'm not sure if that's because I've been more relaxed about it or because I've discovered tuna and corn thins for a delish and very low cal lunch. One thing I'm changing this week is much less eating out. It's too easy to pop down the street for lunch or coffee but it's too expensive and too easy to overeat. The other day I had what looked like a 'sensible' lunch but when I got home and worked it out, it was around 800 calories! So we are setting up a nice eating area on our back deck and having lunch there when it's sunny. I have to be up at the crack of dawn again tomorrow because I'm meeting Simon for a run at 8.00 am. Why did I agree to that? I'm a crazy fool. Still it will be good to get it out of the way early. Oh yeah - one last thing - I did a step class last night. By accident! I'd not exercised all day and felt fat and lazy but you can't run everyday and I'd had to spend hours of my life taking my sister to Centrelink so, a couple of hours before I went out, I checked the timetable for the local gym. They had Spin on at 6.30. Perfect. Except when I got there, the spin room was in mid-renovation! The reception girl talked me into doing step instead. I didn't feel like I got much of a workout, maybe because the instructor made me have a very low step and do the low impact versions. The class was packed and the girl beside me got very territorial - she kept moving her step over, boxing me in. Half the time, I just made up my own routine because I had no idea what we were supposed to do. I tried copying the woman in front of me but have found the one and only person in the world more un-co than me! At least I had the excuse of being new! But I got through it and have tried something new. I hate "the step class". I'm guaranteed to be more unco than you. Then again my step instructor fell off her step and broke her ankle. Now thats unco. I'm in an unco class let by an unco. Step is a foolish class anyways, it was devised to make us all feel fooliosh
I can do the step warm up...and that is about it. I look like something from a very bad Mr Bean episode.
I used to do step class, i'm un-co too and I just couldn't get it. Good on you for doing your own thing though, i'm not even co-ordinated enough to work that out!! By 11:33 am , atOh man, Spiceworld! I love that movie! I've been looking for it everywhere, but apparently no one in the south-east suburbs understands the undeniable equation of spice girls + film = GOLD. mmmm yum, tuna on cornthins... gonna start eating that tomorrow!
Step classes - Aargh! I hate them with a passion, and I'm a fitness instructor/personal trainer. Hey, not all of us are graceful, co-ordinated... or can even make our legs and arms do stuff at the same time.
What is it with classes and woman getting all stroppy about their space? Sounds like a great night and damn, what a fine selection! Great to hear about the Kmart gear too, it's nice when it's cheap because gym gear can be so expensive. LOL Dan used to be addicted to Pretzels but not the low fat ones, he went for the sweet one. I love the mexicana, yum. And how about your boy and you running! How cool is that :-) By 2:47 pm , at
::3.10.06:: Who Likes Short Shorts? Um.. that would be me. For the past few months, I've been joking with my sister about buying a pair of Daisy Dukes. Well today I was in Big W and they had some cheapo denim shorts so I couldn't resist. They are short but not Daisy Duke short. I tried them on and they don't look too bad. I had this idea that decent legs weren't enough, to wear shorts you need a flat belly as well. Cos a big, bulging tum over the shorts is no a good look. Well, these ones have a few pleaty bits that make the belly look not too horrific and, to be honest, I rather fancy myself in them. I got dressed up for my sister in the shorts with fishnets and heels. I'll try to talk her into taking a pic if I can. I feel like I should be out washing the car and doing suggestive things with the hose. Other than that, I'm going to implode - I got the KMart catalogue with all their workout stuff. They have the weights I want for $20 instead of $30 and other stuff I totally need. I was planning on buying a yoga mat but they have high impact flooring (ie. interconnecting foam squares) for gym areas. I'm wondering if that would work for yoga... I've also been planning to buy some non-slip pads for under my mats and maybe that would solve both problems. Just put the mat over it for everyday then pull the mat up and use it for weights and yoga? The first time I felt like i was starting to look sexy was when I put on a pair of short shorts and saw myself in them. I want to see a pic! By Twisted Cinderella, at 2:19 am
I've just been glancing through the Kmart catalogue too. I bought some short shorts inDArwin. definitelycooler. Not sure I would be game towear themin public. I also have the bulging tummy problem. Thanks for the tip re Kmart. Love workout clothes. I think the mats are a good idea.
*wolf whistles* Shorts sound cute! Yes the KMART exercise equip looks great. I am still jogging on my mini tramp from there after 18months and it is as good as new. My crosstrainer is also from KMART and that is great. I say go for it. Have a spree. Best thing is you can always take it back if it's not right.
yes i agree with everyone above, we need to see you that is sex in shortie shorts!!!!
(Trust me this is going somewhere) I rang up to get a patch test for a spray tan today, the woman asked if I wear shorts - I said "hell no". Then I remembered - i'm not a size 22 anymore, maybe I could get away with shorts now? And then I read this post - I think i'll go and try some on.
I dream of wearing shorts! More yoga for me to tone my cottage cheese thighs and it is slowly working. By 1:32 pm , at
I would love to buy a pair of "short" shorts, just don't think I would have the courage to wear them, lol.
::2.10.06:: Maintaining I normally track my calories on the Calorie King site and, for the past few weeks (0r more), I go over my calorie limit every day. This causes me much angst and suffering. Every day I feel like a big, lardy failure so my whole focus is on not eating then that makes me eatmore. It's a pressure cooker, folks. So today I decided - bugger this. And now have a maintaining profile instead of a weight loss one. I can eat over 2,000 calories a day! Woohoo. So instead of pigging out, I've not felt like eating. It's all mind games, isn't it? I've had a great day today. Last week was my first week off work and I spent it running around doing shit. Well this week the running around has stopped. I'm concentrating on the important stuff - writing and exercise. I did well on both fronts - getting a whole chapter finished and running 10ks. I'm well pleased with that effort. Tomorrow I have a few things on, like my writing class, but I'm planning to do some yoga plus a 5k run. Oh yeah, the Coles yoga dvd. I did it last night and it's a tough workout. Well for me it's tough. You folk are prolly much more flexible than me, cos I'm like one of those cheap knock-off Barbie dolls. You know, the ones who's limbs don't move. It's a good basic yoga workout and I reckon it would be good for any level. It might be a bit hard to follow if you'd never done a yoga class before because they use some weird camera angles. It mainly concentrates on mat work. I really must get a yoga mat because my floor mat kept slipping around, making the downward dogs a bit risky. It doesn't do any of that standing on one foot stuff (I have no idea of the technical name for that stuff). The last fifteen minutes are all stretches. I was rather stuffed by the end of it which is a good sign. The only thing I didn't like is the introduction by Lisa McCune at the start of the dvd. I'm going to have to check I can skip it because it comes up before the menu and I can imagine it would get tired really quickly. Still for $7.95, it's worth the money. I haven't tried the pilates class yet and it comes with a cd that has recipes, training plans etc but they are all in pdf format which really bugged me. Damn cheapskates, just didn't want to print a booklet to go with it.
I was wondering how you went with that DVD, I saw it at Coles yesterday and was tempted to buy it. I think I will go and buy it now that you've given it a rate. Although I have absolutely NO idea what the hell a downward dog is, i've never done yoga. Might need a few pointers! (oops that was obviously supposed to be miss 'your' emails). Geezarse, I carnt spel - marst bee to layte at nyte fer mee - soree. Marst goh too bedd narw. Nytee nyte!! hehe and NO I haven't been drinking.
lisa mccune! mwahahhaa! You'd like to think they didn't print a booklet to save some trees, but cheapskates is more likely.
well done on al the running, that's a super effort. i was thinking of doing the yoga thing. There is this chick at curves who can so some seriously cool stretching at the end and she is as big as me - she said it was all yoga By 12:30 pm , at
Man, I've been going over my calorie limit too. I was way more strict with WW and I know that angst you're talking about. I'm still on 1360 cals but I eat way more because of the exercise too. By 7:56 pm , at
In regards to Calorieking, I too am always over my calorie limit. I seem to start off great but by the evening, I am a woman out of control aaaggghhh!
::1.10.06:: Sunny Sunday I've had a lovely day. I started off making up my breakfast bircher muesli with some fresh passionfruit from the market. I thought I didn't like passionfruit but it's just that fake passionfruit flavouring I hate. I'd forgotten how tart they are - it's like the food company conspire to make everything we eat either sweet or salty. Personally I like all the flavours of the food rainbow (well except for bitter stuff like chinotto - gross). I sat out on our back decking and enjoyed the morning sun. Then later my sister and I had a nice cuppa and decided to have a picnic lunch. We headed over to the historic seaport of Williamstown. Lunch was crackers and tuna. My new way to eat fish is the small tins of tuna - I can handle them well. Yummy and lots of protein. We couldn't resist the icecream kiosk though. I had a scoop of my favourite - butterscotch. I'd forgotten how magically delicious butterscotch icecream is. The picnic also involved lots of lazing around, checking out hot guys. Well, we tried. Williamstown might be an historic seaport, but it's not an historic seaport full of hot men, darn it. Then we went to Borders for coffee and magazine reading. Now I'm about to try out my new yoga dvd. Coles have launched a program called Healthy Steps and have a dvd with yoga and pilates for $7.95 so I got it to try. I'll do a review on it later. They were also supposed to have yoga mats but I couldn't find them. Last month I posted my exercise goals for September then forgot all about them. Oops. So my October goals are simple:
That's it. Easy peasy, lemon squeezy. I'm having trouble with my weights. My muscles aren't sore enough afterwards so I feel like I'm not working hard enough but for the chest presses etc I can't lift any more weight. I'll need to get someone to spot me! Anyway, I'm off to do my yoga then watch the new episode of the Gilmore Girls my sister downloaded.
That does sound like a perfect day. We went to a picnic today too but stupid me forgot the sunscreen and I am so red raw, it hurts! I love real passionfruit and it's great drizzled on a berry compote with vanilla fruche, mmmm, yum. By 8:38 pm , atsounds like a great day. I have never tried passionfruit, I must give it a try on grocery day. I have been eating quite a bit of tuna and salmon lately too. I love them on my salads as a bit of tasty extra protien. I love the challenge of trying a new exercise dvd. By Twisted Cinderella, at 1:09 am
